The Physics of Superheroes

My students need high interest reading material regarding the physics of motion, such as The Physics of Superheroes.

My Students

Have you ever wondered how Superman could leap those tall buildings in a single bound? Well, so do my students. The Physics of Superheroes by James Kakalios provides high interest superhero-based reading that addresses difficult to understand physics concepts.

The majority of my 8th grade students are advanced content students.

They function at a high level with difficult standards. They are curious, and hard working. Our school is in the suburbs and is comprised of students who are generally preparing for a college education.

My Project

This book will allow the students to explore some rather dry concepts in an exciting new context. The book details the physics behind the classic superheroes. We will spend class time reading, discussing, diagramming and calculating the physics of the super powers possessed by the characters in the book. Prior to certain chapters, the students will make predictions regarding the physics responsible for the super powers attributed to that specific superhero. We will then read and determine the accuracy of their predictions. After reading, the students will extend their learning to designing their own superhero using real laws of physics. They will design the physical body of the superhero and assign him or her special "powers". They will support their designs using physics laws and math. Additionally, this activity will help them to improve their problem solving skills, as well as their scientific inquiry skills.

I am concerned about the low numbers of American students who are seeking careers in engineering.

I have done specific research on why there are low numbers of females pursuing higher education in the areas of physics and engineering. This research shows that girls lose interest for a variety of reasons, one being the limited amount of "creative" thinking time. Given this unique way of applying physics concepts, I hope to increase the interest level of the girls in my classes.
