This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Everyone loves to play games - my first graders are no different. During math workshop, my students rotate through various stations but we don't have any partner games or addition/subtraction manipulatives.
My students come from a low socio-economic background.
Our area was devastated by a massive 100 year flood. Our school was spared but many of the families at our school lost everything. Even though a year has past many still do not have their lives back together.
Our school is a Title 1 school in a predominately low economic area. Many of the families in our school have incomes that fall near or below the poverty line. Most can not afford to buy educational supplies and/or resources for their child.
My Project
The partner games would provide hands on learning for my students. They would foster cooperation and good sportsmanship. Many of my students have never played board games. They would even be able to check out the games and take them home to play with their parents. The manipulatives would strengthen their math addition and subtraction skills. The manipulatives can also help foster problem solving skills.
Help us become Mega Mathematicians!!!
My students need the opportunity to work with others cooperatively while improving their math skills. It will provide them with tools to use at home as well.
