This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Malcolm X once said, "Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." For many students with disabilities, the challenge to prepare for post-secondary life is a great one.

My students come from an under-served community in Northern California where only 28% of the adult population hold a Bachelor's degree.

My students attend a public charter school that serves primarily first generation college students. We also serve an above average number of special education students with 14% on Individual Education Plans. Our special education program focuses on inclusion of all students with disabilities which means that my students work alongside non-disabled peers for the majority of their educational career.

My Project

In order to help our students with the transition into their post-secondary life, we will be creating a transition portfolio that will assist our students to be as independent as possible. We will use the binders and dividers to create a portfolio that will hold their post-secondary goals and profiles, information on their learning styles, career and college interest surveys, a collection of proficient work, employment information, financial information, cover letters and resumes. This transition binder will serve as a toolkit for my students and their parents. It will be the central place where important information will be kept. It will also give a bigger picture about our students' strengths, abilities and interests. It will build their self-advocacy which will be integral to their post-secondary success.

Often youth with disabilities do not succeed as well in areas such as employment, living arrangement, post-secondary education and training, and community participation compared to youth in the general population.

It is our duty to make sure that we empower these students to be independent, successful adults.
