This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you were in school, what kinds of materials did you like to use to practice your reading and writing skills? I'll bet that you liked the fun, hands-on materials your teacher used. Those colorful, hands-on materials are exactly what my students want, but don't have access to!

My students are second graders in an Arizona district with a high population of families with low socioeconomic status.

Most of my kids receive free breakfast and lunch because their families cannot afford even the small cost of school food. Many of my students do not have parents or families to read with them at night, and to assist them in developing reading and writing skills. As a result, my kids come to school without the basic skills needed to become lifelong readers and writers. That's where you come in!

My Project

If my students had access to the Lakeshore Reading & Writing Instant Learning Centers I'm requesting, they would be highly motivated to participate in literacy center time. With these centers, my kids could work and play with colorful word blocks, dry erase boards, story mats, and sentence builders. And with these materials, my students would learn how to build simple words, write and use sight words, construct and read detailed sentences, and revise their writing to include unusual and interesting words. These skills are vital to becoming the lifelong readers and writers I want my students to be.

The children I am teaching today will someday be the adults in charge of our society, and we will want them to be intelligent, lifelong readers and writers who will encourage future generations as we have encouraged them.
