Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine trying to communicate your wants and needs but not having the words to express yourself. That is the challenge facing all of my students! They all have some form of language processing problem, be it from autism or a speech and language impairment.
My students are a young and energetic group in an early intervention class.
Their ages range from 3-6 years. All of them have special needs and are in my program to help them develop language, improve their behavior, and for some, get them ready for a more academic educational experience. All of them use visual prompts and aids to help them express their wants and needs because many do not have the expressive language skills to do so on their own.
My Project
I am requesting lots of great visual materials in the areas of writing, pre-reading, and math. The materials include: phonics builders to help children learn how to stretch out and segment words, white boards and markers for practicing writing sentences and words, math manipulatives that work on sequencing of events as well as counting and sorting, sentence strips for group writing activities, and language boxes that will inspire the kids to play, create stories, and encourage verbal language. These hands-on materials will help my students develop vocabulary and language skills to help them communicate, learn to read, and access the math curriculum as they go on to higher grades.
My project is so important because communicating basic needs is something most of us take for granted.
Many of my students have average cognition but cannot express themselves due to language processing deficits. By having these additional materials, my students will be able to learn, request, and practice vocabulary successfully because they will have that added visual prompt or teaching-tool to help them and boost their confidence.
