This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Using arts and crafts to inspire the reluctant writer is my passion. I believe that creative writing is something that can never be taught to kids by giving them lectures and telling them all the rules, patterns, and formats. To make them good at creative writing, it is important make them practice.

Our school is one of the largest elementary schools in the city of Chicago.

With a population of over 1800 students in grades k-8, we are happy to boast about the fact the we have an attendance rate of over 95%. Yes, our students enjoy coming to school. Our school is designated as a Fine Arts neighborhood school with an open enrollment. My experience has thought me that many of the students entering the first grade do not like to write. For some it may be difficult for them to control the movement of their pencil on the paper, and others simply cannot come up with something to write about. Yet, the ability to write clearly and legibly is important for all students and we teachers need to provide additional help for our students to improve their writing skills. By incorporating arts and crafts during my writing sessions and journaling at this young age, I hope to prevent negative feelings towards writing in the future.

My Project

The resources provided to my classroom will allow me to give my students exposure to fun and exciting activities related to creative writing. Here is a sampling of some of the activities I plan to introduce: journal writing - with lots of illustrations; letter writing; newspaper - read all about us; fiction writing; comic strips; poems; make a paper bag book; composing an autobiography; and writing, illustrating, and binding their own book for submission to a young authors contest.

Each and every child has some artistic abilities.

In some these grow extensively and in others it needs to be continuous nourished. The primary use for the resources I requested will be to inspire kids to write by employing the use of arts and crafts. My goal is to make writing a fun and effortless process for my students. The broad impact of this project is to have my student leave my classroom with a general understanding of: generating ideas and getting them down on paper.
