My Students

"You can grow plants in water." This statement always gets me odd looks, and I want to show my student that you can indeed grow plant, and food in water.

The school where I teach is a small rural school in eastern Colorado, there are 60 students in grades 7-12, and I teach just about everyone of them, many of them have been with me since I began teaching four years ago.

The the majority of students come from farming families and have a strong work ethic. The school is focus of the community for everyone of all ages. The science classroom was built in 1970, and is used to teach all levels and subjects of science.

My Project

My students understand the the work that is takes to put food on the table. They see it as seed, as small plants in the ground, and as a harvest. It is the life blood of our area. Agriculture is a subject that they understand the importance of and I want to use this as a branching off point to teaching them about so much more. I want to teach them about hydroponics, ecology, and aquatics. An mini-aquaponics tank would open up a world of opportunities us.

This project will bring the wonders of biology to my classroom.

Each year many of my classes get to take on a special project that they work on through out the year, and this will give my 8th grade life science students the same opportunity. They can look at how plants grown and use nutrients, how fish live and breath underwater, how the water cycle effects everything, and that you really can feed the work by growing plants in water.
