Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Even though most of the students at Oscar de la Hoya Ánimo Charter High School are Hispanic and come from Spanish-speaking homes, they are very limited in their vocabulary. In order to improve their fluency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish, it would be very helpful to have thesauruses as a reference.
Most of the students will be taking the Advanced Placement Spanish Language examination in May of 2007. This test will assess their knowledge in reading, writing, grammar accuracy, speaking and listening skills, and their knowledge of culture. Moreover, they will be reading and listening to Spanish used in countries all around the world, and therefore, some of the words that our students are familiar with might have different connotations in other places. It would be helpful to have thesauruses in the classroom so that the students can expand their knowledge of the language that they are already familiar with.
Not only am I the Advanced Placement Spanish Language teacher at our school, but I am also the Spanish Department Chair. I have taught Spanish 2 and Spanish 3 at the school and have seen the need that our student population has to increase their vocabulary. We are a public school. Our mission is to prepare students for college, leadership, and life. One way we do that is by keeping our school small (560 student population) so that we can better know and serve individual students. Also, we offer a rigorous curriculum, which includes offering Advanced Placement courses. Finally, we offer Spanish to our students not only so that they can appreciate their culture and heritage, but to prepare them for a world where it is beneficial to be bilingual. By donating thesauruses, you could help increase their fluency and knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world.
