Learning is about more than just receiving information. It is about engagement, interest, and motivation. It is also about using skills in a variety of contexts. I want to provide my students with versatile learning tools that will get them excited about classroom activities.
My students are a bright, enthusiastic bunch of first graders who attend a small school in a middle- to low-income urban neighborhood of California.
They are curious and always ready to learn, but they do not always have access to the resources they deserve.
My Project
I would like to provide my students with student white boards to use in a variety of classroom learning activities. These are functional classroom learning tools which the students will be excited to use. With the lined boards, the students can try out writing conventions and story ideas during Writer's Workshop lessons, practice their handwriting skills, and write answers to discussion questions during reading, science, and social studies. We could use the blank sides of the boards during math lessons in which the students would be able to write out computation, draw pictures to solve problems, and visually share their mathematical thinking. The letter magnets would be incorporated in a "Hands-on Spelling" center which allows students to practice spelling words by physically manipulating letters. The easel would be used for demonstration of phonics and grammar skills in small-group reading lessons.
Fun, useful learning tools like these student white boards make school experiences more exciting and engaging for young learners.
These resources will keep my students motivated, and help provide them with positive school experiences which will be the foundation for their future education and success.
