Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is something special about reading a book that you own. It feels great to not worry about bending back the cover or bruising the edges as you carry it everywhere you go. Many of my students have never had this experience.
I teach 10th grade English at a school where 100% of the students receive free lunch.
This is a very special international studies public charter school, which is a school of choice for these students. Every student who graduates from our school will have met the A-G requirements to enter a UC or CSU school. For many of these students, they will be the first generation in their families to attend college.
For most of our students, English is a second language, and many of them are behind in their reading skills. Some of them are behind several grade levels.
My Project
Since the only way to become a better reader is to read, we recently implemented a school-wide reading program, Accelerated Reader.
Last year, we attempted a book swap event to jump start the program. When we asked our students to bring in books to swap, we discovered that most of our students don't own books, so they had none to swap.
We have tried a lot of things to get books in our students' hands, and we are starting to see reading levels improve. There are still a lot of students struggling to find books, and we're not getting complete buy-in from these kids. I started to think...
What if every student could have a chance to pick a book that they could keep?
So I have chosen about 200 brand-new books from lists of our students' favorite books and from lists of teen bestsellers, so my students can each choose a book to call their own.
If they each own the books, unlike library books, I can ask them to highlight words they don't know and annotate in the margins.
There is this scene in the movie "Freedom Writers" where they realize the books they have been handed are new.
When my students met the real Freedom Writers last year, the Freedom Writers shared how much that meant to them. It meant that someone believed they were worth something. And you know what? They actually read those books. For some of them, it was the first book they had ever really read. You can make this happen for my students. Make them feel worth it. Buy them books worth reading.
