This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Brown bear, Brown bear, what do you see?
Twenty-four Kindergarteners learning to read!
This is the first year of a dramatic turnaround effort at my Philadelphia elementary school.
Last year, less that 10% of fifth graders read proficiently. This year, the school reopened as a college-preparatory charter school with new leadership, new teachers, and a new commitment to students and families. Reading achievement is paramount.
The joy and skills needed to be lifelong readers start in kindergarten! Every day, my kindergarten scholars are working hard to climb the mountain to college! Some of my students are learning to speak English, some are learning to hold a pencil, all are African American or Hispanic, and all LOVE books.
My Project
My students read and are read to every day, but we need more books! Since this is my charter school's first year running the school, we don't yet have robust libraries.
A collection of Eric Carle books will serve many purposes. It will be the base of our first author study, prompting students to think critically and find common themes across texts. Eric Carle books will be used across subjects to support science, math, writing, and character education. Eric Carle books will also provide exciting reading material, just right for the beginning readers in my class.
These Eric Carle books will quickly become favorites in my Kindergarten class.
They will engage and support my students as they develop literacy skills and a lifelong love of books.
