My students need an ELMO (document camera) to take their writing and editing skills to the next level in order to be successful on their writing TAKS test in the Spring.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Work Hard. Get Smart." This is the rally cry of our 7th grade language arts class as we attempt to bring our writing up from a 5th grade level to at least a 7th grade level by March.
My 7th graders attend an inner-city school in a major city in Texas.
More than 85% of my students are considered to be in a low socioeconomic status and therefore qualify for free and reduced lunch at school. My students are predominantly of Latino/Hispanic descent, and a large percentage of my students know English as their second language. However, these statistics do not phase my students who dream of going on to college in order to better support their families.
My Project
As mentioned above, many of my students have come in to the 7th grade not being able to write complete sentences. For the most part, their writing is as good as their 5th grade counterparts. Since my students will be taking a TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test in March for writing, I am requesting an ELMO (document camera) in order for us to practice our writing and editing skills in real time. I envision my students being able to share their actual written work with the class in real time, which will allow the whole class to be able to model editing and revising their work for their classmates. Having an ELMO will transform learning in our classroom as it will increase the students' confidence with their writing as well as enrich each others writing by having their writing peer reviewed by the entire class instead of just one other student.
For the vast majority of my students, they can barely write coherently in their native language let alone in the English language.
If my students do not master their writing, spelling, and vocabulary skills now in 7th grade, they will only fall further behind than where they already are. Written communication is a vital skill in today's society, and without writing skills, my students virtually have no chance of improving the lives of their families and the well-being of their communities.
