My students need various leveled book titles so that each child can access a variety of books to read that are "just right" for their developing reading abilities.
It brought a smile to my face to hear my student say with surprise, "Mrs. Nish I can read this book!" I want each of my students to have access to books that they can read independently, but with a limited classroom library, I won't be able to keep up with their growing reading abilities.
My students attend a small elementary school in an urban, middle- to low-income neighborhood in California.
They are a bright, enthusiastic bunch of First Graders but they do not always have the resources they deserve to enrich their learning and their lives.
My Project
My students need various leveled book sets so that each child can access a variety of books to read that are "just right" for their developing reading abilities. In First Grade, the world of independent reading is opened up for children. The revelation of "I can read this book!" is a powerful discovery because it means that the child now has independent access to new knowledge and experiences. During this one school year, students' reading ability often progresses from reading very simple texts, to much more complex ones. This growth varies for each child. It is important for each student to practice reading books that are just right for his or her reading ability, and to have access to more difficult books as s/he becomes a stronger reader. The sets of leveled books which I am requesting for my classroom will allow me to provide my students with books that will engage them in building upon their reading skills, and enjoying the experience of independent reading.
Reading is a powerful learning tool and life skill.
In order to grow as readers and learners, children need books that they can read on their own. Donations to this project will provide books to enrich the learning and lives of deserving children.
