My Students

I teach Band and General Music at an urban public school. It is so important for children to be able to learn an instrument. Additionally, sharing the experience with friends and family in a culminating concert is a wonderful thing.

My school is located in a high-needs area.

We have a very diverse population of pre-k to eighth grade students. Parents are not asked to contribute any money at all for their child's participation in band. Students are lent an instrument and a method book as well as a few other supplies throughout the year. There really is not much money left over for any other needs. I try to do as many repairs as I can and write my own arrangements to save money. For the past three years the band has been very successful. We have put on winter and spring concerts and are on track to do the same this school year.

My Project

In addition to teaching band and general music I also teach an after school guitar program. Many of the students are doing well with guitar and I want to give some of them the opportunity to perform with the concert band or maybe even start a jazz band at my school. For this to work I would need an electric guitar, so that the guitar could be heard with the band instruments.

Performing music is such a wonderful opportunity.

It helps build confidence and creates a sense of community. Your donation will help to create more opportunities for students to be in band and perform at my school!
