This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine what it would be like to never have any expectations? This describes most of my students when they come to KIPP. Sometimes no one expects them to succeed because of their zip code or the color of their skin. My students will succeed and this equipment will help them do so.
My school is KIPP TRUTH Academy.
We are a part of the national network of charter schools, KIPP. We pride ourselves in being different from "the school down the street." The TRUTH in our name stands for "tenacity, respect, understanding, teamwork, and honor;" and we instill these values in our students daily. We have the hardest working kids around! School is from 7:30-5:00 M-Th, 7:30-3:00 on Fri and two Saturday Schools a month from 9:00 to 1:00. They have homework every night AND homework over Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring, and Summer break.
My Project
We've been fortunate enough to raise funding to expand our building. We have a new science lab in a great space with functional lab stations, but we lack the basic supplies to put in it. I'm requesting graduated cylinders, beakers, test tubes, test tube racks, and test tube clamps. These are lab tools and supplies that students will have to actually use to be able to answer TAKS test questions about AND also to be prepared for high school, college, and a potential career in science. Using these tools set them up with skills that they will use in everyday life, such as measuring, proportions, and safety.
This project is important because these are the future doctors and engineers.
Science is often overlooked when students are struggling with the "3 Rs;" but in reality science is a part of everything we are and do. I want to inspire my students to enter a field in science. These tools will set them up for success in that field.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
