Ears To Success: Audio Books For ESL/Print-Impaired Students
My students need audio books of 12 required classroom novels such as "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "Eragon" in support of ESL students and Print-Impaired students.
ESL students and Print-Impaired students find themselves struggling to read and comprehend the required classroom novel. Frustrated, these students give up trying to read. There is no budget for extra tutors. Students are NOT reading with comprehension due to language barriers and print-impairment.
Our student body is made up of an eclectic mix of poverty-level, middle class, and a small group of the wealthy.
Student ethnic breakdown is 40% African American, 44% White, 12% Hispanic, and 4% Asian and Other. There is a definite group of inner-city students and rural students. The campus is the smallest high school of three in the district. The International Baccalaureate program is present on campus including the Middle Year Program and the Diploma Program. Small yet solid numbers graduate each year with an IB Diploma or with IB credit for high level classes passed. All grants the campus had enjoyed previously have since expired. The campus budget has alarmingly shrunk in size due to the economy. Professional and paraprofessional positions have been axed in order to balance the district school budget.
My Project
Reading with comprehension can be successfully supported by combining the senses of hearing and reading. ESL students and Print-Impaired students need the opportunity of being able to both hear the story narrated while they read. I request one copy of the following titles in AUDIO BOOK FORMAT: Romeo and Juliet, The Kite Runner, To Kill A Mockingbird, Eragon, The Crucible, and 7 additional classic novel titles. Students will be able to read with comprehension and word recognition as they listen to the narration. The story comes alive, reinforcing word pronunciation/meanings and character explanation. Reading the novel as they listen reinforces word recognition, correct spelling, story comprehension and eliminates the language barrier by learning English. Issues with print impairments are addressed and overcome by using AUDIO BOOKS. Students will succeed in their goal of reading with comprehension accompanied with the confidence to participate in class and complete assignments.
AUDIO BOOKS provide ESL students and Print-Impaired students the ability to succeed in the classroom with required class novels.
Using both senses of hearing and reading together, the AUDIO BOOK provides students with a positive environment to read with comprehension, enjoy word recognition/correct spelling, address and overcome print-impairments, and eliminates the language barrier by learning and practicing the English language.
