Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you recall how it felt to be in middle school, acne popping up everywhere, and then having to be stuck on some simple math problem because you forgot some of the basics from elementary school? Now, that cute girl/guy is right there…teacher asks, "Do you have a computer so you can practice this…"
Working with middle school students can be a challenge all its own, but when they are faced with socio-economic challenges, that others don't have, then, these same students are at a significant disadvantage in an even bigger way.
Technology is key today in helping bring our students up to par and providing access is KEY. Math helps open doors and my students know this, which is why my classroom is packed daily during lunch and after-school, with students requesting tutoring. Sharing time on the teacher's personal computers is all that we currently have in our classroom, but right now, this is better than nothing, and more than many students have at home. District budget cuts have made it such that resources are severely limited in an already-poverty-ridden area.
My Project
Having four new computers will permit students to come in before and after school as well as during lunch to work on math activities. They will be able to access the Internet and the teacher's website, which has review and lessons that provide much-needed practice and practical help. Students who are in need of visual cues can take their time in reading the notes on-line and/or print out what they need if they were absent the previous day. The new projector will be used to illuminate the teacher-directed lessons in a brighter, easier-to-see manner onto the screen. Currently, our projector is outdated and the images are difficult to view.
All students deserve access to technology.
Math is often THE subject most despised, yet, in our class, this isn't the case because computers are utilized. Accessing on-line resources, including the teacher's own math website, will allow the much-needed practice middle school students currently lack. Homework assistance, math review, and the ability to see how math concepts are used in careers today can be easily found, inspiring students to learn and appreciate their mathematics learning.
