Using Stuffed Animals to Teach Fiction vs Non Fiction?

My students need 17 fiction and nonfiction children's books, such as "The Kissing Hand and It" and a "Baby Raccoon" to add them in discovering non-fiction books.

My Students

Curious George, Franklin, and Olivia: What do they all have in common? They are the main characters in beloved children's books! Using stuffed animals from these stories, students will search for nonfiction books about monkeys, turtles, pigs, etc. and pair them with their favorite fiction titles.

I am a teacher librarian at an elementary school that services many Navy and Army families in Hawaii.

The library is the center of encouraging literacy on our Preschool-6th grade campus. About half of the students at my school are military dependents who move locations every three years. They often identify with certain fictional characters and want to borrow books only about those characters.

My Project

To broaden the reading preferences of my second and third graders, an introduction to the nonfiction section will help to encourage reading in other categories. During the lesson, students will be divided into pairs and assigned a stuffed animal from a picture book. They will then use the library computers to locate the book in the fiction section and a nonfiction book about real live animals from the picture book. For example, students can compare a fiction book about Peter Rabbit to a nonfiction one about rabbits. Since this is a hands-on activity, students are more likely to internalize the differences between fiction and nonfiction books and discover a whole new section of the library to explore.

Your donations will provide the fiction and nonfiction books to allow this lesson to take place.

Students will be motivated to find the books on the computer and locate them on the library shelves. Successful completion of this assignment will give students the confidence to use computers to look for other books to satisfy their information needs.
