Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in our classroom consists of writing, reading, critical thinking - and amazing conversations. The majority of our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and have low literacy and interest levels. Because of this, I often must "jump through many hoops" to help them move forward in their skill levels.

We are a school of severely disadvantaged students.

Our students come to us (in high school) reading anywhere from a second grade to eighth-grade level. It is then my job to help them read at a HS level, prepare them for college-level writing and help them gain the skills necessary for the workplace. Our school is special - everyone loves being here, from the administrators, to the teachers, to the students. Everyone here cares. Students know they are in the right place each and every day.

My Project

The use of flexible seating is gaining momentum in K-12 education. Research says that when students feel comfortable in their environment, their stress levels are reduced and they are more likely to participate and learn. Over the last year, I have been transforming my classroom with my own money, bringing old furniture from home to accomplish this. I have removed 25% of the student desks and added soft, incandescent lighting (the harsh overhead, fluorescent lighting has been known to cause headaches).

The softened environment is makes learning more inviting!

When students and fellow teachers alike have walked in my room, they invariably say, "Wow, this is so warm. I wish I could be in here all the time!"
