The thrill of holding current technology in your hands is breathtaking for many of us. I want my Kindergarten students to feel that as they read, sing, and analyze stories.
My students are 20 wiggly, curious, and loving 4- and 5- year-old kindergarten students.
Our school is located in a high poverty area so many students do not have access to newer technology at home. My students love to sing and dance and listen to stories.
My Project
My students are just learning the fundamentals of reading. We sing and dance the letter names, sounds, high frequency words, and numbers each and every day. During center time I have the students listen to stories on our cassette player. They have to all listen to the same thing and cannot move at all because they are "hooked up" to the listening center hub. With these shuffles the students can choose the song or story they want to hear, they can dance or perform the learning motions that go along with each song, and they can choose the activities that are suited to their individual level.
Many people learn best by movement which is a major reason the shuffles will impact the student learning in my room.
I plan to record myself reading the stories with expression and then providing direction after the story for a comprehension activity to extend the story. With the shuffles I can be working with another group of students while these are completely engaged in learning. Students will be able to follow along in books or on ABC charts as they sing and dance their way to literacy!
