FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Throndson's classroom raised $5,713

My Students
When analyzing data or graphical displays, how do I know if the picture on my calculator does a good job of representing the situation? The graphing calculators are wonderful tools, but our students need to be able to reason about why they told their calculator to do certain things.
Most of our students come from either low-income or high-income households.
We do not have many middle-income families in our school zone. A technology divide separates our high-achieving students from our low-achieving students. We are a traditional high school, serving grades 9 - 12 in a larger city in Iowa.
My Project
The TI-Navigator system will allow our classroom to have 32 student calculators on a network. The teacher and students can share data sets as well as view every other student's calculator screen. Discussions about why certain graphs were chosen, or why certain measures of center or variability were chosen can be emphasized by looking graphs of the data. Students will be able to lead the class through a demonstration and different solutions can be compared quickly.
Students will also be able to take quick "checking our progress" quizzes that can help guide instruction. Using their calculators, the students can answer short questions, if everyone gets the questions correct, our class can proceed, however, if a large number of students get the questions incorrect, additional time needs to be taken to fix their mistakes. Using the TI-Navigator, these quizzes are short and built into the existing lesson plan.
This project will allow our class to focus more on the analysis of data rather than typing the data into a list on the calculator.
The technology will also allow our class to make sure everyone is up to speed on example questions. By making our classroom more efficient, our students will be able to learn more effectively in our classroom.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
