Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What are students thinking:
1. If I am not reading on grade level, how can I understand what is in the textbook?
2. Well, if I just sit here and be quiet then the teacher won't notice!
3. Bah, Bah, and Boring. Please, engage me, because this science stuff is confusing!
My students are third-fifth graders, in an urban school setting with economic challenges in New Jersey.
Many of my students are not reading on grade level. As a newly appointed intervention specialist/basic skills teacher, it is my responsibility to facilitate academic success. Specifically, to improve student reading comprehension, fluency, and writing.
My Project
I am requesting a set of Magic School Bus science literacy books, four science center flip charts, a science kit on simple machines, and two sets of science reading comprehension cards. The Magic School Bus makes science concepts interactive and kid friendly, with a comic format. The science center flip charts will allow the students to learn about rocks, minerals, space, animals, and magnets. Next, a simple machine kit comes with tools that the students can use to see how science is interactive. The reading comprehension cards teach students to reflect on their learning.
Students will learn about science by participating in learning literacy centers that promote reading comprehension, inference, prediction, and experimentation in science. Centers create an environment that encourages the following:
1. Students actively engaged in meaningful learning.
2. Students working independently.
3. A peaceful working environment that is conducive to small group instruction.
Centers provide students opportunities to (a) observe and explore, (b) repeat and modify whole group activities (c) conduct experiments (d) record information and (e) access relevant information in books.
Promoting student centered learning allows students to reflect on their learning and enhances self-discovery. Students can be rotated though the centers to engage in various science related reading/writing activities.
