Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What if you were a student from a home that did not speak English? What if your home language was so broken you had no idea how to begin to write it down? Many of the students at our school struggle with this problem every day. They struggle to learn recognizable English.
Our students are from diverse backgrounds, eager and wanting to learn.
Our population is largely Hispanic and African American with 98% qualifying for free/reduced lunch. What published reports are not yet showing is our quickly growing international population of students fleeing fighting in their home countries and refugee camps all over the world.
We are a preK-5th grade campus with an enrollment of over 900. Our performance ratings are acceptable with, room for improvement in reading/language, math, and problem solving skills.
Our students tend to come from homes of limited or required education only. Their learning styles are varied and often not compatible with typical classroom settings. Creative, inventive teaching strategies and processes are necessary to bring them to our goal of high school graduation and college readiness.
My Project
This project requires collaboration between myself and the 4th grade lang.arts teacher. Students will generate a list of nouns that are commonly seen in their neighborhood. Following a simple chart, students will fill in adjective, noun, verb, adverb to create a poetic like structure that will be written out in complete sentences.
After poems are finished, students will improvise to create a melody in C pentatonic scale. The sub contra C bass bar will give a grounding tonal bass to the students' compositions. Accompaniment parts will also be generated above the home pitch C.
Finally movement/dancing and art work, if time allows, will be added to create a total learning package. Students will become composers of lyrics, song, and dance thus fulfilling Pres. Nixon's quote,"I think that to create great music is one of the highest aspirations man can set for himself."
This project involves learning across the curriculum.
Although not listed above, math and science objectives properties of sound and fractions will be covered in this project.
Ultimately, students who complete this project will have experienced setting a goal and following it through, cooperating and working collaboratively. What a great accomplishment for any 4th grade student.
