"Please stop moving," sighs every teacher in the world. My goal is to continue making our room brain friendly by giving fidget toys, squishy seating, and fluorescent light filters so students can become independent in their need to focus.
Our school is extremely friendly.
If you read Part A of our grant you will know that our students come to school with many different needs. We want to make school a place the students are accepted and can be challenged. We want them to have an environment that fits their needs. They are learning to work as a team and encourage each other.
My Project
Our list looks kind of crazy...exercise balls? These are for students to sit at tables with when they need to move around yet work at the same time. The seat cushions are to help students stay "anchored" to their spots. There are many fidget toys to keep hands busy like the fidget water toy. There are also hand writing helpers to encourage each student's independence. We have theraputty to help those struggling with their fine motor skills. We are requesting timers to help children be in charge of their own work time. Light covers shield the harshness of fluorescent lighting and replace it with calm, soothing light. All of our items will benefit a multitude of highly differentiated learners. (We want a classroom Howard Gardner and his multiple intelligences would be proud of!)
This project is important because real needs will be met for years to come.
Changing spaces and environment will help student's behavior, academics, social, and emotional skills. Just because there are desks doesn't mean it is the only, best option. We want to encourage freedom and individuality without shame...bottoms up!
