Don't You Wish Your Biology Class Had Been This Digital?

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We may be living in the digital age, but my students are on the wrong end of the digital divide.

My students are hard-working and come from diverse backgrounds.

Our urban public high school is host to students from all over the world -- Mongolia, Mexico, China, Peru. Most of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and almost all of them are poor but they come to school every day, prepared to do their best.

My Project

With three digital cameras, we will be able to create stop-motion animations of all kinds of biological concepts. I try to provide my students as varied an experience with science as possible, with self-directed inquiry projects, labs, art projects, and videos to name a few. I'd like to add stop-motion animation projects to my repertoire. Why is this valuable? For one, it is a very effective way to teach concepts like photosynthesis, cellular respiration, mitosis, meiosis, DNA replication, and protein synthesis. Equally important, it develops students' technological skills and knowledge. Students have FUN with this project, and can proudly show it to their families at our Exhibition Night at the end of the year!

In the digital age, my students have been largely left behind.

This project gives them the opportunity to learn powerful, fundamental concepts of biology while honing their technology skills. It's a winning combination!
