My students need 20 books that will help them understand the importance of getting along with others, being kind to others, and standing up for someone being bullied.
Students in middle school are increasingly feeling pressured to fit in and be accepted. Unfortunately, many of them feel the way to accomplish this is by bullying and putting others down. I would like to change this thinking and believe that it needs to start in early elementary.
We are a very small rural school in Wisconsin.
Because of our size our students generally are with the same students throughout their elementary and middle school career. As the PK-12 School Counselor I am fortunate to be able to get to know the students early and watch them grow throughout their educational careers. I am in each elementary classroom for 30 minutes each week for Classroom Counseling. I feel that I get to know my students well. As with many other people in today's economy, our students and their families are struggling to economically survive. This added stress trickles into their academic performance and their relationships with their peers.
My Project
I want to make a difference in our students lives. I would like to implement a Bullying Prevention Program that teaches students how to get along with others, how to make positive choices, and the importance of their own positive self esteem. I feel that it is important to start this education at a young age. I have been working on a Classroom Counseling Curriculum that will focus on these points. You generosity would allow me to purchase books that I can use in the classroom. I have found that the younger students respond well to books and they seem to have a better understanding of the concepts that are being discussed. It is my goal that if a strong curriculum is in place at a young age, then by the time the students are in upper elementary and middle school, there will not be as much bullying and relational aggression.
Everyone remembers a mean word or phrase that someone has said to them.
It is my hope that I am able to eliminate some of the means words and replace them with more positive words and supportive actions. Your generosity would enable me to fully implement the program that I plan to begin in each elementary class.
