Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every year, like many schools in America, my school looses more and more funding. As a result our classroom supplies and resources are becoming more and more scarce each year. We take good care of what we have, but time inevitably wears out things, and they now need to be replaced.
I teach first grade to 20-24 inner city students every year.
The children in my school live in a tough neighborhood. Many of their parents feel it is unsafe for their children to travel outside of their homes except to go to school. As a result the children's experiences of the world around them are somewhat limited. That is why it is so important that at school we make learning as engaging as possible in order to make every moment that they are in our classrooms count.
Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Hands on materials and activities are a great way to help young children engage in learning. All children learn best when they can put their hands on something such as play money, shape pieces, or other manipulatives and use them in activities that make the objects and their meaning real to them.
My Project
By donating to this classroom project you will be helping to make mathematics learning real, accessible, and fun for my students. The addition and subtraction games, math facts practice board, fact families house, and activities included in the math centers materials I have requested, will help my students make the most of their independent, small group learning time throughout this school year. The materials will be used both for direct teaching and also for reinforcement of skills throughout the school year.
Frederick Douglass once said, "A little learning, indeed, may be a dangerous thing, but the want of learning is a calamity to any people." My students want to learn, and if you should choose to donate to their classroom you can immensely improve their educational journey for the rest of their lives.
