Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Reading is boring." "But I don't read." "I hate reading!" These are the things many of my students say when they find out that they will be required to read over 2000 pages in my class. They feel this way about reading because they have not been exposed to great young adult literature in the past.

My 10th graders are amazing students who have lofty goals and dreams.

Unfortunately, they are at a striving school in a failing school district and have not received the education they need or deserve. Many of my students are learning English as a second language and even those who are not are generally 2 or more years below grade level in reading. In order for them to achieve their goals, my students need to be exposed to great books that will spark their imaginations and get them interested in reading. They need to be caught in a FLOOD of books!

My Project

I am working to build a classroom library full of rich, well-written books that will appeal to my students. With these books, I will be able to help students find things to read that are both interesting to them, and on a level that is accessible, but will also push them to be better readers. By being surrounded by a flood of good books, it is my hope that my students will begin to see all of the vast options they have to choose from in the world of literature and embrace reading as a meaningful part of their lives.

The achievement gap in this country is a literacy gap.

My students will never be able to compete with their more affluent peers if they do not significantly improve their reading skills. By providing my students with a classroom library full of interesting and inspiring books, you will be helping them close that gap and put them on the path toward success.
