My students need both nutritious breakfast food to start their day, and books and magazines to feed their minds.

My Students
How successful are you all day without a healthy breakfast first? For my students, a nutritious breakfast is rare, and I would love to invite them in my classroom before school to enjoy some breakfast while reading and discussing great books. Their bodies and minds will be ready for the day!
My students attend a elementary school in a high-poverty neighborhood in a suburban town.
My school was contentiously closed several months ago, but was miraculously reopened to give us another opportunity to succeed. Many of my students come from an at-risk home environment, but are eager and motivated to do their best everyday. My classroom is the Special Education inclusion room, so these 5th graders have a wide range of abilities, interests and learning styles.
My Project
Many of my students come to school without a healthy breakfast, which greatly impairs their ability to be focused and energized for the strong academic demands of our fifth grade. Getting the chance to get together with my students before school for breakfast and book discussion would be significant on three levels: students would start their day with a healthy meal, I get to know my students better and establish a strong teacher-student relationship, and students are reading for pleasure in a social atmosphere! It's the perfect combination to help students fall in love with reading while building classroom community. This project is all about well-being: physically, socially, and academically. Every week, we will have our "Nourishing Minds" club and will be discussing a terrific chapter book that the students selected. As the year continues, we'll keep going with different books!
With the launch of this project, these 10 year-olds will get to experience a "family" breakfast while discussing terrific literature.
Eating, talking, sharing ideas and opinions, and reading critically will enable students to develop strong minds and bodies. I may not be able to eliminate every obstacle my students' face, but I can help them grow to become smarter and stronger individuals.
