My students need 2 sets of little books (6 copies of 32 titles) on their Pre-K level to use in a small group setting to practice early literacy skills.

My Students
Help my little learners become literature savvy! Remember the feeling you had the first time the teacher let you hold a book while learning to read? Well you can help make that happen!
My 20 four-year-old students attend a Title I Pre-K program in a predominantly rural community.
Most come from economically disadvantaged homes and more than 80% qualify for free or reduced lunches. Most do not have access to printed materials or books.
My Project
Having taught Reading Recovery and early literacy groups in the past, I saw many students who had little exposure to books or printed material flourish when given opportunities to learn about reading in a small group. By having 2 sets of Pre-K books, 32 different titles (6 copies of each title), my students would have many books to learn about early reading skills with. Small groups held 2-3 times a weeks would give students multiple opportunities to learn new skills and opportunities to practice them. Each lesson will include reviewing previously "read" books, introducing a new book, and practicing skills. Skills would include: learning to identify text/illustrations, pointing to words with 1-to-1 match, identifying punctuation, learning about letters and the sounds they make. Having 32 different titles would allow us to have many opportunities to learn about early concepts of reading. That will provide more than 10 weeks of small group experiences.
Currently we have no sets of Pre-K leveled books to use to help develop literacy skills.
Imagine the impact that you will make by helping to fund this project. Students this year and in many years to come will develop early reading skills that will give them a strong base to start with once they leave the Pre-K program!
