My students need magazines, like Weekly Reader and Time for Kids, and dictionaries to enhance our science and social studies curriculum in the new school year.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Save some lives! My students are at great risk of dropping out of school, life, and productive society. Studies prove that increasing their reading interests and capabilities will empower them to lead better lives!
My students are 100% minority, low-income children who receive free lunch and breakfast (as do all of our students) at school.
The school is a Title I school, and, while we are all dedicated to providing an excellent education experience for our students, we recognize that we need help, because their home lives are often bleak. I have students who wear the same, dirty and/or torn uniform to school every day (until I purchased a couple more). Often, my students have no supplies. For some, the only balanced meals and sense of order/safety they have is during the school day.
My Project
My students need magazines, like Weekly Reader and Time for Kids, and dictionaries to enhance our science and social studies curriculum in the new school year. Having subscriptions to Weekly Reader and Time for Kids will open my students eyes to the world outside their neighborhood. Many of my students have not traveled 10 miles from their homes, and their opportunities for enrichment are very limited. It is also my hope that these magazines will peak student reading interest, especially for those who are struggling readers. The dictionaries will allow my students to look up unfamiliar words themselves, thus increasing their reading vocabulary!
Your donation to this request could spark a lifetime love of reading for a struggling child.
That child, who may not know what exists outside his/her poor, downtrodden (often dangerous) neighborhood, will learn that success is an option!
