Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students from many different cultures in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Oregon. One thing we all have in common, even if it is not speaking English, is music.
Most of my students come from very challenging situations.
They are struggling to learn English and find their true potential. One way to keep struggling children in school is music and PE. They are trying hard to be the first in their family to attend college.
My Project
My district has faced many budget cuts. We lost our music and PE programs for elementary students. Now I'm the "music" and "PE" teacher, but I don't have the equipment! I know music, and my girls are so excited about jump rope activities (they are teaching me) but I don't have the resources. We are using the 3 pathetic (broken) jump ropes I bought and brought from home (much to my little girl's dismay). We need 11 sets of "Boomwhackers" musical tubes (10 for students, 1 to teach with) for practicing and reading musical notes and jump ropes of various sizes to keep my students excited about PE and in shape.
