Prepping For Gold

My students need 30 stools in order to equip our Culinary Arts 1 classroom.

My Students

Students enrolled in Culinary 1 class must sit at wobbly Formica topped tables and book learn culinary methods. We share a kitchen with Culinary 1 & 2 students, so turning my room into a prep kitchen will give students more kitchen experiences. We have found stainless tables, we just need stools.

Most of my students come from low income and single parent families.

They list their favorite restaurant and most frequented restaurant as a fast food restaurant, usually within walking distance from their apartment complex. Besides economic barriers they also face the challenge of language barriers. They come from non-English speaking homes and usually only speak English at school or with their high school friends. With the recession, my school has suffered teacher losses as well as lost economic support and funding for programs. Fewer teachers but more students means that classrooms need to be higher functioning. My goal is to enable these high school students to become a viable and successful part of the culinary/hospitality work force, which can provide income for them to further their education after high school if they so choose.

My Project

My school's culinary program has produced many national competition winners that have gone on to secondary schools with the prized scholarships. The students that have won would not have been able to go to college without these scholarships. With the experience that the students gain in our working restaurant, we have been able to place them in positions in the rich culinary community that exists in my city. The stools that I am requesting would allow students at the first year level to gain more hands-on experiences as we envision turning a classroom into a prep kitchen. The students will be able to practice and improve their knife skills as they become the garde manger area for the main kitchen. These improved skills will help them to win more "gold".

As stated before, my students do not have the economic resources to advance their education after high school.

With my school's culinary program, we place students in a position to win scholarships, earn higher income in part-time jobs, and meet influential leaders in the hospitality and foods industry. Many of the kids entering our program, do so just for the opportunity to eat. We take that hunger and turn it into hope, which is what they were really hungry for; but didn't know where to look.
