My Students
They say print is dead, but we say different! That is why we are trying to create a literary magazine that will help spread literacy in our school. The challenge to creating this magazine lies in the lack of technology available to us. Our school of 3,200 students has only 50 computers available.
My students are in grades 9-12 and come from a variety of ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Since our school is in a large urban setting, we strive to create an environment that is accepting to all students. My creative writing students are highly motivated and ready to make learning come to life. They already devote countless hours of time outside of class to make their ideas happen.
My Project
We are requesting two computers to help us publish our literary magazine. Our school has only 50 computers available for student use in the classroom on a daily basis. Getting computers that have the programs and capability to create a literary magazine has been a constant battle. With the addition of these computers, my students will be on track to successfully create a literacy magazine which will reach over 3,200 students in our school. Additionally, this magazine will be entered into state and national journalism competitions and become a staple in our school for years to come.
This project is a positive step in the goal to create literacy in the classroom.
Students will be producing their own publication that will be distributed in the community. By writing and learning about how journalism works, students will have marketable skills that will help them in years to come.
