Do you remember sitting in math class thinking, "When will I ever use this stuff?" My students need books to help them see the connection with math and the world around them.
My students are 5th and 6th grade gifted and talented students who attend a high poverty school district.
They want to do well at everything and try extremely hard to complete their assignments. However, when they don't grasp a mathematical concept right away they can become frustrated with the idea.
My Project
The use of these materials will help my students see the mathematical world that surrounds them. Instead of asking what's the point of learning this, they'll see how math runs their lives. The books provide real life examples of how math is used in the world around us.
These books will help my students become life-long mathematicians.
Many students understand the literary elements in a story, but struggle with the reasoning behind why there are certain rules in mathematics. As my students develop their mathematical skills, I would also like for them to improve the mathematical thinking by seeing how math really is necessary in their lives.
