My students need 5 microscopes, slides, and lens cleaner to observe and analyze microscopic specimens as an introduction to nanotechnology and other 21st century sciences.
The 21st century holds a myriad of possibilities for our students in the fields of science and technology. Our students need hands-on science experience such as those that having microscopes and slides would provide.
I teach 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade gifted students in a Title I elementary school.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, both cultural and economic. They are very eager to learn and have a great interest in the sciences, but we have limited equipment for giving them the hands-on experiences they need.
My Project
Our study for the 2010-2011 school year has the overarching theme of "explorations." We will be studying historical explorations as well as current and future explorations in the fields of medicine, genetics, energy, space, and technology. The microscopes would allow my students to act as scientists as they explore specimens not visible to the naked eye. They will observe, analyze, and report. We will use this experience as a springboard into talking about medical and environmental explorations.
We need to prepare our gifted students to be explorers of the future so that they will be equipped to take up the charge of advancing our society in the fields of medicine, biotechnology, technology, space, and energy explorations as well as other needs of the 21st century and beyond.
Hands-on science experiments are a critical component of this preparation.
