My students need 5 science materials such as thermometers and magnets to investigate science topics discussed in class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During Science, we love to experiment and investigate! However, we have very few materials.
Why do you think it is important to use hands-on materials? "If you read about it, you can learn. But if you see it, it can give you some ideas of what you can do!"- G, 2nd grade student.
As G mentioned, these experiments and examples from early science can shape what they know about science and steer them towards a future that involves science.
Our school is a very diverse Title 1 school, and these experiences are essential to our students. They may not get the experience of using a magnet or thermometer outside of school. They enjoy seeing how things work, and always have many questions!
My Project
Rather than me telling you how I think these resources will change my students' lives, I asked them:
"Instead of reading about magnets, we like to see what they can hold. Like, is it heavy stuff? If you can see stuff, you can see what the book is talking about."-M, 2nd grade.
"Because I like stuff that I get to use at my desk. You learn more about them. I like science because I get to touch stuff and do things with them. It's important to learn because that's what school is all about."-J, 2nd grade.
"I like science because you can see what happens with things you don't know yet."-M, 2nd grade.
"If we do things with our hands, we will remember more than reading about it. Sometimes when we read about it, we forget the stuff in our heads. I like science because I can learn and get smarter like my dad."-X, 2nd grade.
"I like how it feels to touch things. If a quarter drops into a hole, you can get it out with a magnet. I like science because you get to touch it."-T, 2nd gr.
"Science is more different than other stuff because you have to take a lot of time learning it.
The more you learn about it, the better you understand it."-R, 2nd grade.
As R said, science is different from other subjects. It requires much more hands-on experience and investigation. Without experimentation, we wouldn't have our science curriculum. Please help us to continue our explorations in science!
