My Students

I am a second grade reading specialist at a rural Missouri school and I work with struggling readers. I realize second grade is an important year for my reading students. This is the year that students catch up to their peers . . . or they fall to the point of no return.

I realize I must use as many methods as possible to build my students' reading skills.

One method I have not used is letting my students listen to books on tape. When students listen to books, they receive a model of what fluent reading sounds like and they also build their word recognition, listening comprehension, and vocabulary skills. At the same time, they are learning to enjoy books. While I have a few books on tape, I do not have a place to keep my books where they are readily accessible to my students. The books are shoved in my closet because I do not have an empty table or bookcase to store the books or the player and headphones. When I do want to use the materials, it is hard to find what I need.

My Project

I would love to have a mobile read-along cart that would store all of my listening center materials. This would allow me to keep my materials organized and have them readily accessible to my students. When the materials were not being used, I could roll them out of the way.

They will be able to listen to stories without me reading to them, which will increase their reading fluency and comprehension.
