My Students
Imagine yourself in a school with walls that are the extent of your education - no sports, no field trips, no overnight stays - just walls that for nine months limit your learning to a small and confining classroom. But what if for one week, you could break down those walls? One Week Without Walls.
My students are eager to use and apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in the classroom to the community and world around them.
Up until now, they have spent years at schools with little to no expendable funds for after-school activities, field trips, or overnight stays. Due to the obstacles created by poverty and a lack of educational resources, their entire learning experiences have been confined to both the framing of the schools around them and the cultural and economic norms that consume them in the low socio-economic communities they function in. Motivated and driven, they cave application and real-world relevance, they long for a change to their unvaried routine, and they deserve and need the opportunity to grow as individuals and see and experience the vast and diverse cultural perspectives around them.
My Project
My students have been given the opportunity to break down the walls around them and apply their learning in a way that they never have before. For one week in May, all classes will cease so that students may venture into their and others’ communities to use their knowledge and skills and cultivate their own cultural perspectives. During this week, I want to take my students to a dance studio where they will spend three days learning how to dance salsa in preparation for a school-wide performance at the end of the week. This amazing experience will teach my students about health and exercise and Latin American language, music, dance, and culture. They will gain perspective on and partake in discussions related to cultural differences and norms throughout their communities and the world. Most importantly, however, this opportunity will give my students the chance to take a risk outside of their daily routine and show them what lies beyond the walls of their classrooms: their futures.
Please help my students to break down the walls that confine them.
Help them to see for themselves the real-world relevance to their classroom studies. Help my amazing and deserving students to recognize the strengths within them, challenge themselves, and understand and respect cultural difference. Help make a difference in their lives by donating to this Week Without Walls.
