When Judith Guest writes about dysfunctional families, or when Dustin Hoffman dons a dress and learns to be "a better man as a woman than I ever was as a man," or when 12 jurors attempt to determine another man's fate, these authors and actors speak to human issues facing us all, especially students
I am privileged to teach and learn in quite a wonderful environment--a Magnet high school for gifted students which Newsweek named Missouri's top school, and which typically graduates 100% of its students, over 97% of whom go to college.
But it does so in an economically depressed school district with a zero budget and no monies for resources. These young people are engaged in and dedicated to their own education; their parents are actively involved in that process, and the faculty and administration strive to challenge themselves and their charges by maintaining the highest of academic standards. Our AP and IB programs are vibrant and challenging, and it is pure joy to witness regularly the students learn and grow, despite working with 15-year-old textbooks and limited technology.
My Project
One of our primary goals in history and psychology is to develop a student's ability to read and interpret complicated texts, think critically about that text, and then communicate their understanding, both verbally and in persuasive formal writing, all the while challenging the bias and validity of that source: a daunting task! The literature and films I am requesting will enable students to perceive and think about the world and people and societies and themselves through new eyes; they will get to "play Atticus Finch" and walk a mile in someone else's shoes, thus taking a step out of self-involved, self-indulgent childhood and adolescence and toward responsible adulthood.
I can't tell you how appreciative I am for your consideration of support.
I believe in using as many and varied resources as I can to communicate concepts and to get kids to think. The literature and films of this project will give some very talented students to think in some new and creative ways. Thank you again for your help.
