American History is more than just facts and dates, it can be GREAT FUN!! I teach all subjects in 4th grade but Social Studies is the hardest to teach. My students come from a high poverty area with very little exposure to and knowledge about American History. I love to bring American History to life in my classroom for my students using various Writing and Reading stations. This is a great way to reach those children who are special education students.
My students love learning with Stations but we have no CD player or books for a listening center. My students do not have a comfortable area to do silent reading. My students love to follow along with me as I read books aloud, yet we do not have any books to allow them to. Reading is the area where my students struggle with the most and these materials will improve their ability and interest.
We need a CD player, junction box and books on CD about American History for a Listening center to allow students to read and listen. We need a class set of "Grace's Letter to Lincoln" books to allow students to follow and read about Abraham Lincoln from a child's point of view. We also are in need of 3 Bean bag chairs to give the students a Quiet Corner Reading center. My students do not have books at home to read, so our classroom is the place I want them to learn to love to read. I also need the Jumbo People for a Famous People Art project by having the students create a model of a Famous Person they admire and write an essay describing the qualities they have.
Your help will allow my students to have American History "come alive" for them. By participating in different stations my students will gain independence and confidence they need to become responsible citizens of the future. Your generosity will not only affect them now, you will also touch their future!
