At our elementary school, teaching the life skills is very important. Some of the life skills that our 450 students focus on are responsibility, initiative, caring, pride, friendship, and cooperation.
This school year, Brentwood students participated in a very successful book club with the book, "No Talking". The librarian had monthly book club meetings with students who finished the book to discuss the book and write about it. "Three Cups of Tea" is a wonderful story of how one man faced many huge obstacles to build schools for children in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We would like for our students to know this story of charity and social responsibility. We will have monthly book club meetings to discuss the story and also collect pennies for the schools in Afghanistan & Pakistan to support the author's "Pennies for Peace" project. With this book club project, my students will practice life skills in a very real and important way.
We would like to have enough copies of the book for two or three classes to get started. We are requesting the young reader's edition, the picture book for our youngest students, and 2 books on CD for our students with special needs or for those classes that would like to listen to it as a class. Students will be instructed to pass the book on to another student once they're finished. We would introduce the project at our Monday morning school-wide assembly and encourage students to start saving pennies for peace right away. My students will learn about the children of the Middle East - the challenges that they face everyday - and hopefully learn about themselves as well.
Your help will make it possible for 450 students to learn about the challenges that other cultures face and contribute to the efforts of world peace!
