Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" he cried. "Yes, I let him get away with it. He's one of my best villains. How could I kill him off? It's the same in real life. Notorious murderers get off scot-free and live happily all their lives, while good people die--sometimes the very best people. That's the way of the world, Why should it be different in books?" ~this is the very quote that made me want to teach the novel Inkheart. When I read this part of the novel, my mind filled with teaching ideas. I teach an energetic group of 6th graders in Illinois! My classroom consists of 34 students with an array of learning levels. I have 11 English as a Second Language learners who receive services on a daily basis. I also have 3 students who are receiving Special Education services. For most of these students, they read under a 6th grade level, and have low comprehension and fluency skills.

The number one obstacle I face is finding novels that my students will love and want to read again! I try to find high interest materials to help my students become involved in the literature and luckily they really enjoy the stories and novels I choose. Yet, when they go to the library or during silent reading, students pull out picture books ~ I get so frustrated! So after much frustration I decided to talk to my students about what they like about reading and topics that interest them. To my surprise, my students told me that they love reading the stories with Cd's or when I read aloud. Then I thought, what a perfect way to have a read aloud that, in the novel, reads characters out of their story into real life!

One night I saw the movie Inkheart and when I found out it was based off a novel, I couldn't wait to pick it up. The novel was just as wonderful as the movie. Meggie's dad, a bookbinder, is a Silver Tongue. When he was reading out loud many years ago he "read" the villain Capricorn from a book called "Inkheart" into reality. The villain then kidnapped Meggie's mom. Meggie and her dad must find them and trick them back into the book. I can not wait to to have my students jump into the world and characters of Ankerite. The vast imagery, the suspense, and most importantly adventure. The characters in the novels will be used to teach character traits, there will be a reinforcement of reading strategies throughout the reading, and identifying literary devices.

You can bring the world of Inkheart alive in current and future students. Your donation would be greatly appreciated!
