Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I want to go to X university because I want to join a sorority," said a 17 year-old male student when doing a presentation on a university that interests him. As a first year counselor in a new charter school that serves a great number of first generation students, I hear these kinds of statements quite often. While this specific statement can be easily fixed with a brief explanation on the differences between fraternities and sororities, this statement does highlight a more intricate problem/challenge for first generation students: the lack of opportunities for engaging in informative conversations about college.
Unfortunately, most of my students do not have the opportunity to get first hand information about college from their parents and/or relatives. In fact, many of my students come from families where completing high school was never a reality. For most, school is the only source of conversations about college. My students, and their families, see or would like to see college as part of their future; now, all they need is to learn more about preparing for an experience that has, thus far, been foreign to their immediate surroundings.
Since I am aware of the lack of opportunities for my students to engage in conversations about the "college world," I want my classroom to be a place where "college talk" is not only encouraged but expected. I envision a room full of books that provide a range of information about college, from technical information (SATs, college applications, essay writing) to more profound readings that will not only impact the student but will empower the student's family to be informed and involved in the process.
The books that I have selected will tremendously help our students to become more informed about college. In addition, the books will also provide information to families who will be asked to be involved in a process that is new to them. While this is small step toward empowering first generation students and their families, it is a step that is essential to their success. In a couple of years, our first graduating class will be able come back and share their knowledge and experience about college. Until then, these books will definitely help my students to learn and prepare for the day when college becomes a reality for them and for their families.
