My students need 68 copies of "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. B.'s classroom raised $1,120
This project is fully funded
I am the librarian of a small rural school that services students 7th through 12th grade. In addition to the fact that it is high-need community our school is surrounded by cattle and 120 miles from the closest bookstore. Most of our students live 30 miles from the small public library. We are challenged to encourage an active student body to read. Since we are distance-challenged, our students can’t easily jump on a bus to go down to the local bookstore and hear an author read, or be part of a group book discussion at a library. This project will build a community of readers in a way we are not able to because of our location.
The project will include not only a book for every student but also activities to encourage students to interact with and discuss the book, across grade level. The book, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, was selected because it is an award winning Young Adult novel that is alluring to aspiring young intelligentsia. The book is current, with movie and gaming rights pending. The young heroine is from a high-need community herself and the students will be able to relate to the characters and the obstacles they face throughout the book. The discussion will not only build a community of readers but give them a better understanding of themselves and their own situations.
After the reading of The Hunger Games, we will have our own competitive Hunger Games, including different survival skills. Our Hunger Games will follow the books lead, with the selection of the girl and boy tribute from each class, which will lead into the opening ceremonies, including the remaining students in each class to play the part of characters in the book as well as the district audience. Our FBLA student leaders have agreed to hold their annual food drive, during this book endeavor, encouraging more positive competition relating to the Hunger Games. As far as the true games, we will focus more on survival and physical fitness type contests, which will encourage audience participation, role model behavior and added comprehension of the book.
Only with your help will our students experience a book in so many ways and be able to hold on to what they have learned and carry it through life. Since, the students will be keeping the book; it could be the first book in their newly inspired home library, thanks to you. One of my students told me, “It would be so much fun to experience a book as a school” Only with your support can we make this happen.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
