Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 3rd, 4th and 5th grade English Language Learners in a self-contained classroom. I have fifteen students at a variety of academic and English speaking levels.

Every day is an adventure for the students. They all speak another language and some are experiencing school for the first time. Throughout the day I use my laptop computer to show them a video or photograph of something they don't understand. I have to walk around the classroom and show each student individually, because they are unable to crowd around a 12" computer screen and see. For example in math they were asked how they would measure a candy bar. No one understood the word candy bar so I walked around the classroom with my laptop showing an image of a candy bar.

An LCD projector connected to my computer would allow all of the students to see the images at the same time. I would be able to use PowerPoint presentations to further explain a topic with visuals and it would aid in guiding them in computer activities.

These English Language Learners are learning a whole new way of life. Your generosity will make it possible for these students to make connections with their new language and fuel the excitement they have for learning.
