Working with low-level readers in a high need school has unique challenges; chief among them, finding books that truly get students excited about reading.
One genre that my students are constantly interested in spending time with during free reading periods involve graphic novels. They love the exciting stories and artwork. I love that even my students at the lowest reading level can pick up a comic and feel no shame in reading something that's keyed to their grade level. Unfortunately, our school's media center does not have many books that fit this mold.
I would like to begin a hardcover graphic novel lending library in my classroom for these students. By having a wealth of interesting titles at their fingertips, students will have the opportunity to increase not only the amount of time they spend on reading, but also their reading levels.
Many of my low-level readers are college bound, and putting books that help build stamina in the hands of those students can only further prepare them for the world after high school.
Your help will ensure that students like mine get every opportunity to discover the joy of reading, while increasing their vocabulary and stamina. Thank you!
