My students are going green with green thumbs. I teach third grade and want to take learning science in a different direction with the involvement of my students. Our school is at a 63% poverty level. This includes reduced and fee waived children in our small community with very few places to visit for learning experiences without the enormous amount of money brought in by the parents, grandparents, and guardians involved with these children.
I have committed the next three summers to working two weeks gaining new knowledge in how to engage students in learning. This is my second year involving my students in center related activities, experiments, technology, etc. The students are enjoying and learning during this process. We spend much of our year exploring plants, plant parts, and plant functions. The students have asked for more of these centers. However, I have no money for these types of expenses in my classroom. I feel this is a great opportunity I could not pass. I love the fact that my students engage in their work. If a project needs funding, I usually try to save the money from my own pocket.
I will need a classroom plant kit that allows us to begin our process on plant study. This kit includes various plants and accessories that can get us started with plant growth. To observe these plants, we will need hand magnifiers, a plant model, and flip chart. I feel the students would benefit from another plant kit that relates to dinosaurs. What a way to stimulate the thinking process than with a series of controlled experiments. Every child has the opportunity to be engaged in learning.
Your donation will make it possible for students from every economical background to be involved. They can use this opportunity to grow and learn in an area that many children struggle to understand and comprehend. Children will be able to observe physical changes that transpire over the school year. My students are aware of this project plan and look forward to the new learning experience and the chance to thank donors for this learning experience. Some of these students will never have the chance to visit museums or galleries. I feel as though this is a great opportunity to work together to help these students gain knowledge through life experiences in the classroom.
