Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My 4th graders are amazing... and can be even more amazing! Our school is dedicated to providing an excellent education to urban children. My classroom library, however, is in need of assistance!

Upon entering my classroom in August to prepare for the new year, my heart sank when I saw what was offered in the way of books. Our students are given 45 minutes of self-selected reading time in class, where I read aloud a book to model fluency and the love of reading - and they are required to read for 30 minutes a night for homework. Our students are city-children; it's not typically safe for them to walk to a library... book stores are not even an option. The classroom library IS the only option... year by year, their exposure to books in their classroom maybe our only shot of turning them into readers, life-long learners.

The books I have chosen are 4th grade books and high-interest as well. Some of them are geared at just boys, some at just girls... and some for everyone. Also, I really want to show my students what CAN be in life... Books like "So You Want To Be President" might be an inspiration for a future President!

You know the value of education - you're on this site! Putting reading materials in the hands of urban children may be the greatest tool we ever give them. Research suggests that 20-30 minutes of reading a day can change a student as a reader. Reading influences everything - By offering these 4th grade urban students new, interesting, and entertaining books, we are telling them that we believe in them; we believe that they are worthwhile and we expect more from them!
