Technology For Robot Knights

FIRST Robotics team members are three times more likely to receive a college degree than non-robotics team members. At my high school the student population is mainly low income, English-learners with a dropout rate of over 50%. Most of the students have no one in their family who has attended college. As a chemistry and space technology teacher, I work to make science and technology relevant to students who's daily life is a struggle. Founding a FIRST Robotics team for my students has enabled me to inspire them to learn, grow and accomplish tasks they never thought possible. Robotics team members work with engineering mentors to design, build and program robots for state and national competitions. Team members are exposed to high-level math, science and technology in a great cooperative environment. For the first time, they experience academic success, learn to love science and technology and realize their unlimited potential. Our robotics team is only one year old, yet in one year we have accomplish many great things. The team began as a small group of students who had never used tools, used design or programming software, or led an organization. In our rookie season, the students developed a team structure, raised building funds, designed and built a 100-pound robot and successfully competed in our state robotics competition. At the end of our first season, we had evolved into a skilled, confident team. Both of the senior members of the team graduated with full college scholarships in hand made possible exclusively by their participation in robotics. In an effort to include even more students in our program, I am requesting a printer, ink cartridges and brochure paper that my team members can use to recruit their classmates to the robotics team. A larger robotics team can tackle bigger tasks while providing great opportunities to a larger population of students. With your help, I can enable needy students to learn advanced science, technology and math. Together we will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to begin their journey to become the leaders of tomorrow.
